How to read these tables: "Comparable to" means similar chemistry, active content and intended application range. It does not mean identical performance in every system. A dispersant that is a drop-in for DISPERBYK-190 in an acrylic waterborne system may behave differently in a polyester system. This is exactly why the next three steps exist.


Step 3: Laboratory Screening (1–2 Weeks)

Screening is the cheapest gate in the process — a few kilograms of material and one week of lab time. Do it before anything touches production.

A. Direct Replacement Test

  • Replace the current additive 1:1 by weight with the candidate
  • Use the same dosage as the current product
  • Produce a 1 kg lab batch of the full formulation
  • Measure: viscosity, grind quality (Hegman), gloss, colour, defoaming, leveling, wetting

B. Dosage Optimisation

  • If 1:1 replacement is not optimal, adjust dosage ±20%
  • Many alternatives are more efficient and work at lower dosage — a 0.8% dosage at 30% lower cost per kg compounds the savings
  • Record the optimal dosage for each product

C. Compatibility Check

  • Test with the complete formulation, all other additives present
  • Check for: haze, gelation, colour shift, foam increase, cratering
  • If incompatibility appears, change the addition order first — then try a different product variant

The critical success factor: run the production trial on a standard, well-understood formulation — not on a new product or a problematic batch. This isolates the additive change from every other variable. If the trial passes on a known formulation, the additive is the variable that was tested.


Step 5: Customer Qualification (2–4 Weeks)

How much external approval you need depends on what you sell and what your specifications actually say.

For Internal-Use Coatings (OEM, In-House)

Run the new formulation through your standard QC protocol. If all tests pass, switch — no external approval is needed.

For Sold Coatings (Customer-Facing)
